This guide provides a selection of U.S. intellectual property resources including federal copyright, trademark, and patent laws and state trade secret laws.

Summary

The federal patent laws can be found in title 35 of the United States Code.  Patent offers limited monopoly over a machine or device for the inventor, provided he files and receives approval from the Patent Office.  Patents are divided into design patents, which cover the design features of a machine or device, and utility patents, which cover the functionality of a device.
